Our Methods

Counselling aims to provide a safe place to explore your current concerns and problems so that you can understand yourself and the situation better and thus work towards resolving issues. We take an integrated approach to counselling and psychotherapy seeking to use the best from various methods and schools of thought. Usually we provide counselling for particular issues or areas of concern but sometimes longer term therapy is helpful to an individual seeking to sort out wider or more long term issues in their lives.

We will often use humanistic counselling techniques (as do many counsellors) to allow our client to express, define and seek the solutions appropriate to themselves and their problems. Insights on childhood experiences and their effect on us as adults can sometimes be very helpful and liberating. Understanding how our relationships work using transactional analysis can also be helpful. Cognitive therapy- one of the most effective therapies today- is a very good tool in understanding how our thoughts and underlying beliefs affect our attitudes, emotions, and behaviour, and using that understanding to make meaningful changes. Brief solution focused therapy allow issues to be specifically addressed in a shorter period of time.

Counselling does not involve us telling you what to do, or making decisions for you or just giving advice. We are here to help you clarify the issues or problems and perhaps their roots or causes and find a healthy and practical way forward that is appropriate for you.
